A question: Have you installed the sails "full size" as shown in the plans, or have you reduced them in size for furling?
They look just right.

Hello Keith.
I have installed the sails "full size"as shown on the first photoes of my previous post. It's no reason to make full size and reduced after. But I furl the soak sails.

Hi Roma,
Hmm! So soaking them in water (same as Hamedal) enables getting them to look about 2/3 the diameter of the yard?
I have tried them dry & they are too fat at the centre.
Best, Keith.

Hello,
The work on this model is excellent but for the sails, I can notice a small anomaly. The french Mediterranean vessels are using sails made with a cotton cloth named "cotonine" whose color is very clear, almost white. Your sails are too dark and do not correspond to the color of the time.
It's a pity!

Hello, Gerard.
Thank you very much for your comments. To begin with, please, take into consideration the fact that when the photos were taken the cloth of the sails was wet and in reality the colour of the sails is much lighter - light-light grey.
At one time I was interested in the history of France a lot and I know very well that the cotton does not grow in France, and the material was produced of hemp and flax, like in Russia. At that time "cotonine" was very expensive and obviously, the sails from it were made for the Royal galleys and ships of very rich court people. And it is most likely that for the ordinary xebec the sails were made of material produced by France, even if they sailed in the Mediterranean sea. (If you saw my galley La Real, you could notice that the sails there are practically white).
Anyway, I am very glad that you look through my topic. Thank you for your advice.

Hello,
I am sorry to contradict you but there is no mention of economic considerations on the price of cotonine in any ancient text. All vessels using this Mediterranean canvas that I have met often in my studies on the marine in the south (of France).
Look at the time iconography, the sails of chebec, galleys and other tartans are a remarkably white.
Yours are just a little dark, but do not worry, we will say they are old .

Thank You, Gerard.
Ofcourse You are right. Let us say that sails of my chebec is very very old. In any case to change the sails on the models not very hard work.

Hello Keith.
Please make an experiment - take two similar pices of material (one dry, second soak) and furl on the yard. You will see the difference.
